AA Battery placed in Hydrochloric Acid?

I threw a double A battery in some Hydrochloric Acid, I have seen Hydrogen gas (I think) being released for a couple hours at the flat end of the battery. The Hydrochloric Acid has turned dark yellow. What is going on here? What will happen?
