Why are american statistics so negative when it comes to blacks?

It is what it is. Sometimes the numbers happen to confirm stereotypes. What would suggest? fudging the numbers so they aren't so negative? Or how about rewording them; perhaps something like "Good news, 40% of black Americans will not go to jail at some point in their lives"...
