Since even Jesus taught in the Lord's Prayer to ask God for forgivness, why do some ONLY go to a preist?

For some reason I view that as a Catholic tradition. I've never been Catholic and the only person I've asked for forgiveness from is God. However I have been to a Lutheran Church a few times, and the congregation will recite a prayer asking for forgivness from God, and then at the end the Pastor says "By the authority given to me from....your sins have been forgiven." I never much cared for the Lutheran Churchi.
